Practical therapy for the problems that take over a life

I have used CBT in private practice since 1987 to help people with eating disorders, addiction, anxiety, panic and depression. I also work with the families who are worried about them.

Approach

My work is based on cognitive behavioural therapy. CBT looks at the link between what you think, how you feel and what you do, and at the patterns that keep a problem going even when part of you badly wants to stop.

Whether the problem is food, drink, drugs or another habit you can't stop, or anxiety and low mood that won't lift, those patterns are often strong and well rehearsed. We work out together what drives yours, what it does for you, and what you can do differently. The work is practical and collaborative, and the aim is change you can hold on to after therapy ends.

I have worked in this field for more than 35 years.

What I help with

Eating disorders have been a specialism throughout my career, and I work just as much with addiction, anxiety and depression. They often turn up together, and the same practical approach applies to each.

Eating disorders

Compulsive eating
Eating that feels out of your control: bingeing, grazing, or using food to manage stress, loneliness or difficult feelings.
Bulimia
Cycles of bingeing and compensating, often kept secret and carried alone for years before someone asks for help.
Anorexia
Restriction, fear of weight gain and the rules that come with them, for the person affected and for the people around them.

Addiction and compulsive behaviour

Alcohol and drugs
Drinking or drug use that has stopped being a choice, whether you want to stop altogether or regain control.
Behavioural addictions
Gambling, spending, sex, gaming and other behaviours that work like a drug: a short relief, then the cost.
Staying well
Spotting the triggers and situations that lead back to old habits, and planning for them before they arrive.

Anxiety, panic and depression

Anxiety
Constant worry, dread or tension that makes ordinary days hard work and gets in the way of sleep and concentration.
Panic
Panic attacks, and the fear of the next one, which can lead you to avoid places and situations you used to manage.
Depression
Low mood, loss of interest and the sense that nothing will change. CBT gives you practical ways to start moving again.

How we can work

One-to-one sessions

Individual CBT sessions at your own pace, focused on what is happening for you now and on practical steps towards change.

Intervention

When someone you love is struggling and not ready to ask for help, I can work with you to plan and carry out an intervention, so the conversation happens with care and with a clear next step.

Family work

An eating disorder, an addiction or a long spell of anxiety or depression affects the whole family. Sessions with family members help everyone understand what is going on and how to support recovery without being pulled into the problem.

In the press

James Brown, founder of Loaded magazine, has written about the therapy that helped him recover from drug and alcohol addiction.

I would come out of the Monday-night sessions with Clive feeling like a concrete overcoat was being removed.

He was an expert in addiction therapy, and our weekly sessions over the following year allowed me to build a platform from which to move forward.

In person or online

I see clients in person in central London, a short walk from Sloane Square. Sessions are also available online, for people outside London or for anyone who would find that easier.
